Unity Club Lays The Foundation For A Home For 100 Elderly Survivors Living Alone
Go Back
The Unity Club founded by the First Lady Jeannette Kagame laid in Mukura, district of Huye, the foundation for the construction of a home which will welcome a hundred surviving mothers who remained without families and without children, who are very elderly and living alone, according to the First Vice-President of Unity Club and Vice-Governor of the Central Bank, Monique Nsanzabaganwa.
“We have already built on this site in Mukura, Huye district, two houses where 16 surviving mothers live alone after the extermination of their children and their families. They live next to 60 houses built for the other survivors by the FARG (Genocide Survivor Assistance Fund). They have a trained social worker who takes care of their needs and their health, ”she said.
She added that after these two houses, Unity Club is in the process of raising funds to erect a home for one hundred elderly survivors from different districts of the country.
The two houses in Mukura welcomed 16 elderly mothers, including one from Gisagara district, four from Nyanza, and eleven from Huye.
The Vice-President of Unity Club, Nzanzabaganwa, made these remarks at the site for survivors of Mukura where a strong delegation of Unity Club from Kigali carried out community work (Umuganda) together with the population this Saturday, October 29.
The main activity consisted of planting 150 avocado trees around the houses, and unblocking the runoff water pipes. Then there are messages related to the celebration of the 20th Anniversiare of Unity Club.
“The Home for these elderly mothers will be equipped with all essential social services such as the infirmary, the refectory, the visiting room, the bungalows, a chapel. The children of the households will be able to visit these mothers to give them an affectionate entourage, outside of isolation. The home and the site will be integrated centers of influence and development where sustainable development is achieved, with schools, trees, and a dispensary, etc. », Continued the Vice-President of Unity Club.
She informed that three more shelters have been built in Rulindo, Kayonza and Kamonyi where 6, 8 and 8 elderly mothers live respectively.
Always in the spirit of providing answers to improving the living conditions of widows and orphans of the genocide, Unity Club focused on the Nyundo orphanage which housed 600 children already transferred to families of Home.
Most of these children actually had households that received them. A generous household was encouraged by a donation of a cow from Unity Club.
Within this framework, Unity Club built in Kanembwe (Rubavu) 20 houses which were given to orphan children as an inheritance. Especially since some have reached the age of majority and have started to found families, always with the support of their parent, Unity Club.
Unity Club members define themselves as Unity and Development catalysts that spread light, unity and empowerment.
They are former or current ministers and their spouses who still occupy good positions used for advocacy to help the Government find answers to challenges. Partners like the Private Sector, NGOs, banks like BRD, etc. have been instrumental in raising funds to resolve the challenges.
Another achievement of Unity Club is Cyanikla village in Nyamagabe district where survivors and ex-executioners live together in a model site. They work together to improve their living conditions. They understood the importance of dialogue to build unity and Rwandanity. They practice modern agriculture. They have trades training centers and cultural entertainment centers.
In her message to the population of Mukura, Ms. Nsazabaganwa recalled that Unity Club is celebrating its 20 years of creation and achievements by emphasizing the values of the Rwandan identity (rwandity) which constitute a precious necklace that carry Rwandans. And which are also a Unity Pact to be protected and maintained over the years.
The Mayor of Huye, Kayiranga Muzuka urged the local population to join health mutuals urgently and to go from 73% currently to 100%.
He thanked Unity Club for its support in solving the challenges of the Huye district. “We want to plant 100 ha of avocado trees. We also want to build cowsheds for this site. Every inhabitant must make an effort to practice savings, ”he said.
The Mayor of Huye mobilized his population for respect and assistance to the mentally ill.
