The President Of Unity Club Awarded Seventeen People For Their High Humanity During The Genocide
Go Back
The President of Unity Club Jeannette Kagame rewarded seventeen people who showed extraordinary courage and humanity during the genocide and even after, and they are considered as "Abarinzi b-Igihango cy-Abanyarwanda or Protectors of the Rwandan Unity Pact ”.
“The Protectors of the Rwandan Unity Pact or Abarinzi b-Igihango are those who have never failed in their mission to safeguard the unity of Rwandans. Their heroic acts will be taught to future generations because they constitute reference models, ”said First Lady Jeannette Kagame.
She made these remarks during the second day of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Unity Club, an association that she created and which brings together the ladies of the former and current members of the Government.
“This celebration allows us to show our objectives for the next twenty years, at the same time as we revisit the dark period of the Tutsi genocide and the reconstruction of the country. Many visible achievements constitute our pride as leaders even though there is still much more to accomplish, ”she continued.
Initially, it was certainly necessary to heal the wounds due to the genocide, then rebuild a lasting unity among the Rwandans. We have a common homeland as Rwandans. We are committed to preserving the gains in the reconstruction of this unit, while avoiding internal splits. The stage we have reached is encouraging. We are joining forces with other institutions to help elderly mothers who are left alone. Let us avoid being the cause of the exile of our children, and being the instruments of hatred and evil ”, advised the First Lady Jeannette Kagame.
“The theme of this year which advocates Rwandan identity (Rwanda) as a precious necklace that Rwandans wear deserves to be constantly understood in all its depth. This is what restores value and pride to the commitment to build a country where security and peace reign for all, ”she added.
Moreover, he pointed out, Unity Club members as catalysts or bearers of light will be the primary Protectors of the Rwandan Unity Pact. They will avoid lies, slander, rumor. They will refuse to be left behind.
“We will leave this room with firm and healthy recommendations. We promise to be the pride of Rwanda, and that is our goal. And no one tomorrow will do better than us, ”she pledged.
During the session, the Executive Secretary of the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission presented the results of Unity Club. A report that shows the help given to widows and orphans, as well as the efforts to train young people at all levels in the unity program.
It is an ongoing process to build a stable country in terms of social cohesion and reconciliation against a background of inclusive and sustainable growth.
To return to the Protectors rewarded for their courage and their exceptional humanity, it should be noted that some were rewarded posthumously.
Dr Jean Baptiste Habyarimana was killed because he had opposed the extermination of Tutsi in his constituency. This was the case of cousins Léopold de Munyakayanza and Sosthène Munyaburatwa, Callixte Ndagijimana, Jean-Baptiste Ntawurihunga, or Isavar, Sosthène Renzaho, the Abbés Joseph Niyomugabo and Jean-Bosco Munyaneza alias Vubi, ex-football player of the national football team. , Amavubi, or even Léonard Rutagayintabaza.
But others had the chance to protect to the end and save those they had hidden. This is the case of Corporal Thaddée Karamaga, ex-FAR from Camp Kanombe. His moving and edifying testimony remains a benchmark of bravery and humanity in the highest classical and modern sense.
True commando trained even abroad for six months, Karamaga obeyed his conscience to save lives. Thus, he rescued three families of 19 people in danger from Murambi commune that he moved to Kigali. And that he fed and housed at his expense from June 1993 to April 1994.
He saved two children from the corpses, then three children, and then twelve children entrusted to him. He fled to the DRC with these seventeen children whom he protected against permanent killings. Then after two years he brought these children back to Rwanda. And they're all alive.
Another thing not known to many, it is Corporal Karamaga Thaddée who hid the body of Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingimana until leaving it identified to the RPF fighters about to take the Kanombe camp in Kigali.
A Major had ordered this corporal to bury the body in a hurry. But Karamaga did not apply the order. He hid the body for over two weeks, at his own risk. It was thanks to this bravery that Uwilingimana was later able to be buried with dignity.
We can also add the Italian Father Mario Falconi of the Muhura Parish who saved more than three thousand people; Sister Marcienne Mukamuzima (alive) of the Shangi Center or others who have created associations to help orphans and widows of the 1994 genocide.
