Rwandans Reconciled At Over 80%

The process of unity and reconciliation of Rwandans reaches more than 80%, according to the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Unity and Reconciliation (NURC), Dr Jean Baptiste Habyarimana.

"The study carried out to measure the unity and barometer of Rwandan Unity and Reconciliation, shows that the latter reach more than 80%," he said.

He made this statement on Friday November 16, 2012 in Parliament during the presentation of the results of the NURC, 18 after the genocide perpetrated against the Tutsi.

This presentation was addressed to the members of Unity Club “Intwararumuri” made up of former and current members of the Government.

Unity Club, whose mission is to promote the culture of unity and peace, pillars of sustainable development, began its activities in February 1996.

To return to the record of NURC, its Executive Secretary stressed that Rwandans are today aware that Unity is the basis of peace and success.

One of the criteria for evaluating Unity and reconciliation is citizens' perception of leaders.

The study reveals that 90% of Rwandans trust their leaders. This positive perception also shows that the current leaders enjoy great popular legitimacy.

Research also shows that Rwandans prefer their children to be identified with the nation, not with their tribal or regional affiliation.

To achieve this step, NURC has initiated programs to strengthen unity and reconciliation in Rwanda.

These programs focus on the foundations of Unity and reconciliation, namely justice, good governance, common history, etc.

The work of the Commission also enabled the birth of the Rwandan diaspora. A setting where Rwandans from abroad meet to discuss issues concerning the development of their mother country, Rwanda.

This national consciousness among Rwandans in the country and in the diaspora is proof that Unity and Reconciliation are a reality.

However, not everything is done to ensure that the Rwandans are 100% reconciled. There are still things to be done to achieve this noble goal.

According to Dr Habyarimana, the obstacles to Unity and Reconciliation derive from the genocide and its serious consequences, but also from reconciling justice, the Gacaca. Also point out that this activity coincided with the closing of the week dedicated to Unity and Reconciliation.
