Food For New Village Built Two Classrooms At Cyanika Sector

Food for New Village Project completed the construction of two classrooms in Cyanika Sector of Nyamagabe District. Food for New Village is an integrated innovative project model for 3 years advocated by Unity Club and World Food Program - Rwanda towards the Government of Republic of Korea.

Based on its development experience over the past 40 years particularly on its Saemaul Undong (New Village) approach, the Government of the Republic of Korea sponsored Food for New Village Project to strengthen the WFP’s spirit of Food for Asset/ Food for Work activities in improving the asset base of food insecure communities and reducing the risk of shocks by increasing their level of resilience, in Cyanika Sector especially for Birambo, Gasharu and Munyinya cells, three cells making up together a contiguous geographic area covering over 200 hectares, sharing many natural resources (waterways, watersheds, etc.) and are jointly dependent upon much of the same government infrastructure and services (health, education, agriculture extension, roads, etc.).

Since Unity club believes no sustainable development cannot be achieved in Rwanda without Unity and Reconciliation, it has been engaged as a partner in the FFNV project and leads efforts to intensify unity and reconciliation processes, an area where it has much experience and a unique comparative advantage.

The two classrooms in Munyinya village will host students of “Groupe Scolaire de Rugogwe” in order to strengthen the twelve years basic education policy. All people having worked in the construction of these classrooms were original of Karama cell in order to provide them with money for food, skills and capacities.

According to Kanimba Vedaste, a 63 years-old man having worked on this site, Food for New Village is an answer to fasten development among Cyanika community. The construction has employed more than 50 people enabling them to satisfy their basic needs while providing classrooms for their children.

Food for New Village Project will be implemented in three years where, in the first year, it will focus on development priorities that are :

 Community infrastructure provision, including water supply, class rooms, and a multipurpose community centre ;

 Income generation promotion, including the provision of micro-loans through existing micro-finance institutions, particularly in the area of small livestock rearing and petty trade ;

 Asset creation and rehabilitation in support of imidugudu and the land use consolidation policy, in support of resettlement and agricultural land terracing ;

 District, sector and community capacity enhancement, particularly in the area of agriculture, including the provision of relevant expertise and training at the sector level ;

 Unity and reconciliation activities ; and

 Community participatory consultation in planning, designing, and implementing all development activities throughout the life of the project cycle.
