In commemoration of the genocide victims, the Unity Club has received Frw 50 million from Bralirwa as donation towards the renovation of Cyanika Genocide Memorial Site in Nyamagabe District.
This was announced during a short ceremony held today at the factory offices in Kigali, attended by several members of the Unity Club.
Announcing the offer, Bralirwa’s Managing Director, Sven Piederiet, said that the gesture was in respect of the victims of the 1994 Genocide. The function coincides with the 17th Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi that claimed over a million victims.
“We’re touched by the initiative of Unit Club that is a valuable organization,” he said, before presenting a dummy cheque to the club members. Bralirwa is renowned for its corporate sponsorship to promote genocide memorial and sports activities, among others.
Accepting the donation, the club’s second vice president Inyumba Aloysia, thanked Bralirwa for the gesture and continued support it has offered to the nation. She said the drive to raise about 60 million for the memorial site has already attracted several corporate entities.
“We hope to raise more,” said Inyumba who was accompanied by Rose Murekezi, Juliana Musoni, Esperance Kabarebe and Eustochie Sezibera, who are all members of the club.
The choice to renovate Cyanika Memorial Site followed a visit to the area last year by the First Lady Jeannette Kagame where the local community requested for support to renovate the memorial site. It is expected to provide a decent shelter for remains of over 25,000 victims.
As part of its mission, Unity Club has initiated projects to promote unity and reconciliation through support to vulnerable groups like genocide orphans and families. It has specifically conducted trainings on ICT for orphans, provided basic requirements for the needy and solidified unity and collaboration among members who are former and current members of cabinet and their spouses.
